Picasso & CubismDate: 14 April 2013
Time: 2-3pm Age: 7-10 years old Location: Lake County Discovery Museum Objectives:
State Standards Addressed: 25.A, 25.B, 26.B This is the first of four lessons that accompany the Modern Masters temporary exhibition at the Lake County Discovery Museum. The lesson started with a short lesson on Picasso and Cubism. We started by looking at Picasso's print in the exhibition and identifying characteristics of Cubism. Next, we looked at Picasso's portraits and self-portraits. Then, the students created a self-portraits using pastel crayons. The second half of the lesson was on Picasso's Cubist still lifes. We compared it to a 17th century Dutch vanitas still life and identified some symbols that are meaningful. Then the students created a Cubist still life using crayons, markers, and watercolors. I chose to do portraits and still lifes because I felt these genres would relate to the students the best. Also, I wanted the students to realize that although some people dismiss modern art, the fact is, these artists were intentional in everything they were doing. Many of these artists had training in drawing, sculpting, and painting. And just because it doesn't look realistic doesn't mean that it isn't art. I wanted the students to look beyond what's on the surface and ask critical questions like why and how. Ultimately, I hope the students will look at art with a more critical eye and be more comfortable doing that. |
