Museum Teaching Project - Smithsonian National Portrait Gallery
GOAL: Create a 3-part museum teaching project (pre-visit, museum visit, and post-visit) for a 1st grade class at Oyster Adams Bilingual School in Washington, DC.
MUSEUM: Smithsonian National Portrait Gallery
THEME: I Want To Be...
PROCESS: As a student teacher, I spent 16 hours a week in the classroom, observing students, learning about the school culture, and teaching short lessons intermittently. The idea for the theme, "I Want To Be..." came from a book that I read with a group of students. The book detailed different kinds of jobs that students could look forward to in the future. They seemed intrigued in the idea of the future and dreaming big. At the Smithsonian National Portrait Gallery's 20th Century Americans gallery, there are numerous, exemplary figures who have made a difference in the world. I wanted the students to make that connection and be inspired to grow up to become great people.
The pre-visit focused on learning vocabulary that students will use in the museum visit. It also incorporated a drawing & writing activity that portrays who they are in their current state. Students were given prompts such as "I am wearing...", "I like this object because...". Students then shared their work with classmates.
The museum visit involved a short review session, a group study of a portrait, and then a scavenger hunt that was facilitated by chaperones.
In a similar structure as the pre-visit, the post-visit focused on the students' future selves.
